Introducing our newest activity area - Drama!

      by Laura Ketchum

Drama is the newest activity here at HoneyRock, just added this summer. It has been a blast writing and compiling the curriculum and award cards for the area this past year and amazing to finally see it in action. The program's goal is to create a stress-free environment of grace and acceptance where campers can be themselves and know that they are all valued and loved. Drama at HoneyRock emphasizes a theatrical experience focused on the group working together as a whole, emulating the Body of Christ. Our theme verse is 1 Corinthians 12:12-13, where we use the Body of Christ as a metaphor for what Drama should be. We as are all part of the Body because we are all God’s creations and no matter what role we play in our community, we are all equally loved and valued by our Creator. In a theatrical production, all of the members of the company come together to create a successful play—the lead actor is just as important as a member of the stage crew who is just as important as a member of the chorus.

It has been so fun finally working and playing with campers! One thing that we have all been learning in Drama is to make everyone's ideas the “coolest ever!” We play a game called “Yes, Let’s!” where the campers will loudly suggest an activity for the entire group to mime. Everyone simultaneously yells 'yes lets', and starts to do the activity. Once the activity has been mimed for a while another one is yelled out and the group responds with 'yes lets' and starts the activity. For example, if someone calls out "let's all dig holes," the group responds with "yes let's all dig holes," and every manner of hole digging mime will begin (complete with sound effects). It has been so cool to see the campers really take the idea to heart, affirming each others' creativity. Some great games of “Yes, Let’s” have included becoming dragons, cheering for each other, pretending like we are in a museum, skipping to the bridge, singing songs, playing leap frog and becoming ninjas. It also has been neat seeing campers take back this idea to their cabins, blessing their counselors and cabin mates.
I have thoroughly enjoyed instructing Drama and look forward to see how the Lord continues to use the ministry to encourage and empower more campers throughout the summer!
